About the Type K Thermocouple Amplifier Signal Conditioner Module – Single Channel

The single-channel Type K thermocouple amplifier module converts the millivolt-level output of a Type K thermocouple into a 0–5 VDC analog signal suitable for direct input to PLC analog input cards, DAQ systems, and microcontroller ADC inputs. The module handles cold-junction compensation internally, correcting for ambient temperature at the terminal strip so the 0–5 V output represents absolute temperature rather than the temperature difference between the measurement junction and the cold junction.

Single-Channel vs. Multi-Channel Modules

The single-channel module is the appropriate choice when only one thermocouple needs to be converted in a given location, or when thermocouples are distributed across a system and centralized multi-channel conversion would require excessively long Type K extension wire runs. Using a single-channel amplifier local to each thermocouple and transmitting the 0–5 V output (or converting to 4–20 mA for longer runs) allows standard copper instrument cable to be used for the majority of the cable run, reducing the cost of Type K alloy extension wire in large systems.

Output Scaling and Calibration

The 0–5 VDC output is typically scaled so that 0 V corresponds to 0°C and 5 V corresponds to the maximum temperature of the application range — for example, 0–1300°C for EGT monitoring, or 0–500°C for CHT applications. This scaling is set at the factory or configurable in the field depending on the module variant. When integrating with a PLC, the engineer needs to verify the scaling and configure the PLC's analog input scaling parameters to match, ensuring that the displayed temperature value matches the actual thermocouple reading.
