LVIT Miniature Linear Position Sensor
Through-bore LVIT Position Sensor for Applications Where Size is a Constraint and/or Superior Stroke-to-Length Ratio is Required

The LZ-13 series (Linear Variable Inductance Transducer) miniature position sensors are inductive, contactless devices designed for use in factory automation or assembly machinery applications where space is a premium. The LVIT is offered in nominal full-scale ranges from 2.5 to 200 mm (0.1 to 8 inches) with an excellent stroke-to-length ratio. The sensor has 12.7 mm (1/2 inch) outside diameter stainless steel body with a 1 m cable for I/O connections. The 4.78 mm (.188 inch) diameter through-bore of an LZ-13 provides clearance for its 4 mm (.157 inch) diameter moving target rod with M4 thread and hex nut, which is made of the same material as its housing. This through-bore feature also means that the sensor is not subject to damage from typical mechanical overstroking. I/O connections are made via a 1 m (39 inch) axial cable and includes ASG's proprietary Senset™  field recalibration feature.

About the LZ-13 Series Miniature LVIT

The LZ-13 is the smallest member of the ASG LVIT family, housed in a 13 mm (approximately 0.5 inch) OD stainless steel body designed for OEM and research applications where sensor size and mass must be minimized. Despite its compact dimensions, the LZ-13 retains the full LVIT sensing principle — inductive spoiler coupling with microprocessor-based linearization and DC-in/DC-out output — in a package that competes directly with miniature resistive potentiometers on size while offering the superior service life of a contactless sensor.

When Miniaturization Matters

In embedded OEM applications — medical devices, small robotic actuators, compact test fixtures, and precision valves — the sensor's physical size directly constrains what is possible in the overall design. A sensor that is too large forces the designer to increase the mechanism dimensions, add structural material to support the sensor mass, or accept measurement compromises from a longer moment arm between the sensor and the measured point. The LZ-13's sub-inch diameter opens design possibilities that are not available with standard 19 mm sensors.

Reliable Contactless Linear Position Sensing: LVIT Advantages for Demanding Industrial Applications

Engineers seeking reliable linear position sensing in demanding industrial environments should consider LVIT (Linear Variable Inductance Transducer) sensors from Alliance Sensors Group. These contactless inductive devices provide solid performance where traditional options fall short.

    • Contactless, frictionless design — No moving parts or wear, delivering long-term repeatability and eliminating degradation seen in potentiometers.
    • Superior stroke-to-length ratio — Overall length only slightly exceeds stroke, enabling compact integration in space-constrained applications.
    • High environmental robustness — IP-67/68 sealing, shock/vibration tolerance, and -40°C to 105°C operation suit harsh conditions like hydraulics, automation, and outdoor equipment.
    • Accuracy and resolution — Linearity ≤0.1% FSO, resolution to 0.025% FSO, with stable performance across temperature ranges.
    • Field-programmable scaling — SenSet™ feature allows quick on-site adjustment to match mechanical setup, reducing calibration time.
    • Low power and fast response — <1W consumption, 250–500 Hz update rates for real-time feedback.
    • Cost-effective alternative — Matches or exceeds contactless performance of LVDTs and magnetostrictive sensors at prices closer to industrial-grade potentiometers, with simpler installation (no ring magnets or complex machining required).

LVITs excel in factory automation, mobile hydraulics, cylinder feedback, and subsea applications by balancing reliability, ease of use, and total ownership cost. Explore options at alliancesensors.com for your next design.
