While it's easy to get caught up in this noise, investors trying to get ahead of the curve need to focus on the big trends.

We have identified these big trends in The Global 20.

The list includes the rapidly growing field of genomics, a group of emerging countries that are outpacing the BRICs, and the revolutionary new way that retailers sell goods.

What is LVIT Technology? LVITs, Linear Variable Inductive Transducers, have been around for more than 30 years, and are becoming very popular due to their relatively low cost and flexibility to be packaged in many different forms. LVITs are contactless position sensing devices that utilize eddy currents developed by an inductor in the surface of a conductive movable element to vary the resonant frequency of an L-C tank circuit.

What is a LVIT and where are they used? LVITs, Linear Variable Inductive Transducers, which have been around for more than 30 years, are relatively low cost, contactless position sensing devices that utilize eddy currents developed by an inductor in the surface of a conductive movable element that is mechanically coupled to the moving object whose position is being measured.

Linear position measurement is a frequent requirement for many industrial automation or process control systems, QA functions, and R&D testing. The actual position measurement function is normally done by some type of position sensor, the selection of which quite often is based on just a few key specification parameters and its purchase cost. However, using the sensor’s purchase cost for economic guidance can be very misleading.

Those of us old enough to remember the “good old days” recall that grade school focused on learning the 3 R’s: reading, ‘riting, and ‘rithametic. In the world of sensors, there are also 3 R’s: Repeatability, Resolution, and Response. As important as these sensor parameters are, there is often confusion in the mind of users about exactly what they mean and in what ways they tend to interact with each other. This article attempts to explain these 3 R’s for position sensors and to dispel any confusion that exists.
