About the Type J Thermocouple Sensor Probe Industrial Head Assembly

The Type J thermocouple with an industrial head assembly is designed for process temperature measurement applications where the 0–760°C operating range of Type J is suitable. Type J thermocouples offer slightly higher sensitivity—approximately 52 µV/°C—compared to Type K, making them a practical choice for many industrial measurement systems.

The industrial head assembly features a standard DIN 43729 footprint, weather-resistant construction, and conduit entry, allowing direct integration into typical industrial instrumentation and process control environments.

Type J vs. Type K for Industrial Applications

The selection between Type J and Type K thermocouples is primarily based on temperature range and application requirements.

Type J thermocouples are typically limited to approximately 760°C in oxidizing environments due to oxidation of the iron positive leg. In contrast, Type K thermocouples can operate up to approximately 1260°C under similar conditions.

For applications below approximately 500°C—such as steam systems, food processing equipment, heat treatment at moderate temperatures, and general process piping—Type J is a suitable and commonly used option.

It is important to ensure that the receiving instrument is configured for the correct thermocouple type, as Type J and Type K produce different voltage outputs for the same temperature. Mismatched configurations will result in inaccurate readings.

Industrial Head Assembly Features

The industrial head assembly provides environmental protection and a reliable connection point for thermocouple wiring. The sealed metal enclosure protects terminal connections from moisture, contamination, and mechanical damage.

Inside the head, a standard DIN terminal block allows for secure connection of thermocouple extension wire. To maintain measurement accuracy, Type J thermocouple extension wire must be used between the sensing junction and the measurement system. Standard copper wiring may be used downstream where appropriate signal conditioning or compensation has been applied.

The industrial head design ensures compatibility with standard plant wiring practices while maintaining reliable performance in demanding environments.
