The PT100 RTD in a 3-wire industrial head assembly provides a high-accuracy alternative to thermocouple-based temperature sensing for process measurement applications. PT100 sensors—platinum resistance temperature detectors with a nominal resistance of 100 ohms at 0°C—are widely used for precision industrial temperature measurement due to their excellent accuracy, long-term stability, and linear output characteristics.
These sensors operate over a typical temperature range of -200°C to +850°C, with performance defined by the IEC 60751 standard. Compared to thermocouples, RTDs offer improved measurement precision, although with a narrower usable temperature range.
3-Wire Connection and Lead Resistance Compensation
In a 2-wire RTD configuration, the measured resistance includes both the sensor element and the resistance of the lead wires, which can introduce measurement error—especially in installations with long cable runs or varying ambient temperatures.
The 3-wire configuration adds a third conductor that allows the measurement system to compensate for lead wire resistance. When all three conductors are of the same material and gauge, the system can effectively cancel out the resistance of the lead wires, significantly improving measurement accuracy.
This method typically reduces lead resistance error to a minimal level, often around 0.1°C in standard industrial installations.
Industrial Head Assembly and Protection
The industrial head assembly provides environmental protection and a reliable connection point for process wiring. The sealed terminal head protects connections from moisture, contamination, and mechanical damage while supporting standard industrial installation practices.
The assembly features a DIN 43729 mounting footprint, allowing compatibility with standard terminal blocks and temperature transmitters. A conduit entry provides secure routing of process wiring into the head enclosure.
This combination of PT100 sensing accuracy and industrial head packaging makes the assembly compatible with many standard industrial process control applications.
