The LZ-19 Series of LVIT (Linear Variable Inductance Transducer) position sensors are contactless devices designed for use in factory automation or assembly machinery applications where space is a premium, as well as for external mounting on pneumatic cylinders to sense rod position.
The LVIT is offered in nominal full scale ranges from 0.1 to 30 inches (2.5 to 750 mm) with an excellent stroke-to-length ratio. The sensor has a 19 mm (3/4 inch) outside diameter stainless steel or optional aluminum body with a 1 m axial cable for I/O connections. The 6 mm (0.236 inch) diameter through-bore of an LZ-19 provides clearance for its 5.2 mm (0.200 inch) diameter, PVDF-sheathed moving rod, which is made of the same material as its housing. This through-bore feature also means that the sensor is not subject to damage from typical mechanical overstroking.

The LZ-19 is Alliance Sensors Group's standard-diameter general-purpose LVIT, housed in the industry-common 0.750-inch (19 mm) OD stainless steel body. As the most widely specified member of the LZ LVIT family, the LZ-19 covers the broadest range of industrial automation and OEM positioning applications with a combination of standard mounting dimensions, multiple output options, and competitive cost compared to both resistive potentiometers and DC-LVDT alternatives.
LVIT vs. DC-LVDT: Understanding the Difference
Both the LZ-19 LVIT and a DC-LVDT in the same 19 mm housing provide DC-in/DC-out linear position measurement with no contact between the sensing element and the housing. The difference is in the sensing principle and cost structure. The DC-LVDT wraps a standard AC-LVDT with internal signal conditioning electronics, producing a premium-cost sensor with excellent linearity and temperature performance. The LVIT uses inductive frequency-shift sensing — a fundamentally simpler transduction mechanism — to produce a sensor with comparable performance at a cost closer to a precision potentiometer. For most factory automation applications, the LZ-19's LVIT performance is indistinguishable from a DC-LVDT in practice.
Output Options and PLC Integration
The LZ-19 is available with ratiometric, 0–5 V, 0–10 V, and 4–20 mA outputs, covering the input requirements of virtually all industrial PLC analog input modules. The 4–20 mA current loop output is the preferred choice for cable runs longer than approximately 10 meters, where voltage drop in the cable resistance would affect a voltage output but does not affect current loop accuracy. For shorter runs and panel-local installations, the 0–5 V ratiometric output provides excellent noise immunity without the loop power supply required by 4–20 mA systems.
