The TCA-MS-K-8-A4 converts up to eight Type K thermocouple inputs into individual 0–5 VDC analog outputs, making it easy to integrate multi-channel temperature data into PLCs, DAQ systems, or custom data acquisition platforms. By providing dedicated signal conditioning for each channel within a single module, it eliminates the need for separate amplifiers and simplifies system design.
The module performs cold junction compensation at the terminal block, ensuring that each channel is corrected for ambient temperature at the connection point. This allows the output signal to represent the true temperature at each thermocouple junction, even when installed in environments with varying cabinet or ambient conditions.
Why a Dedicated Multi-Channel Amplifier Matters
A Type K thermocouple produces a very small millivolt-level signal—approximately 41 microvolts per degree Celsius—which is not suitable for direct input to most industrial control systems. The TCA-MS-K-8-A4 amplifies and scales each input to a 0–5 VDC signal, providing a stronger, more stable output that is easier to transmit and less susceptible to electrical noise.
This is particularly important in industrial environments with high electromagnetic interference, such as areas with motor drives, welding equipment, or high-current switching devices, where unconditioned thermocouple signals may be affected by induced noise.
Cold-Junction Compensation and Measurement Accuracy
Thermocouples measure temperature as the difference between the sensing junction and a reference junction, typically located at the terminal block. Without cold junction compensation, changes in ambient temperature at this connection point can introduce measurement errors.
The TCA-MS-K-8-A4 continuously measures the terminal block temperature and applies compensation to each channel, maintaining accurate readings across the operating temperature range without requiring additional user intervention.
Integration and Output Compatibility
Each of the eight 0–5 VDC outputs is independently buffered, so a load or fault on one channel does not impact the others. This ensures stable, reliable operation in multi-channel systems.
The outputs are compatible with most PLC analog input cards and standard 12-bit or 16-bit ADC inputs. For applications requiring current loop transmission over longer distances, the voltage output can be converted to a current signal using an external V-to-I transmitter. However, for panel-mounted or cabinet-local installations, the 0–5 VDC output provides a simple and cost-effective solution.
